Suspension is a vital component of all vehicles, yet its importance is often overlooked or not realised. Suspension needs to be in top working order for everyday driving so that the effects of pot holes and bumps in the road remain unnoticed.

Driving over a bump in the road this causes the suspension spring to flex up and down until it settles, however it may take some time for the spring to return to its idle state, making the car unstable to drive. Therefore the spring is combined with the shock absorber, commonly known as the 'shock'. The purpose of the shock is to dampen this springs bounce resulting in a more stable drive.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Your shock absorbers are filled with a special substance known as "hydraulic fluid". When the 'shocker' is compressed, this fluid is instantly forced by a piston through a small entrance hole in the shock absorber main cylinder and into the other end of the unit. This radical design will stop this action happening quickly, so the spring cannot continuing to bounce, this will ensure that all four tyres stay in good contact with the road surface. In dangerous driving situations your vehicle will rely on this operation to maintain stable.

ARE MY SHOCK ABSORBERS WORKING?
On a level surface, you can tell if they are working properly by  pressing down on one corner of your car and letting go. Count the number of bounces the car makes before it comes to rest. If the car bounces more than once this might be an indication of  severe wear of your shock absorbers. They may be faulty and should be checked straight away.

IMPORTANT
* A vehicle with defective shock absorbers can take as much as 2.6 metres extra to stop
* Poor handling can put you and your family seriously at risk of having an accident
* Shock absorbers are vital for positive steering and safe braking
* They smooth out bumps, jolts and give stability for comfortable driving
